Committee Function
Book Publication Makes proposals for publications. Oversees publication and marketing. Four publications to date: Haggadah For A Secular Celebration Of Pesach; audio tape of songs in the Haggadah; Pushcarts and Dreamers; New Yorkish and other American Yiddish Stories; and Festivals, Folklore and Philosophy: A Secularist Revisits Jewish Tradition. See more information on publications page.
Continuing Education Plans lecture series on topics of general interest to the membership.
D-GO Council Dynamics of Growing Older (D-GO) is the name of our own support groups, where our members can discuss personal problems or common concerns, be listened to respectfully, and often get help in clarifying the problems. There are five groups. Each group meets on a Sunday morning, ending the meeting with a simple meal together, a great way to get to know each other.
Holiday Observances Develops and plans annual Rosh Hashonah observance and Passover seder.
Liaison Meets with members of the other Secular Jewish organizations in the Philadelphia area -- Jewish Children’s Folkshul and the Philadelphia Secular Jewish Organization, Workmen’s Circle and the Secular Humanist congregation Shir Shalom -- to plan joint activities.
News & Comment Our in-house publication. Published ten times a year, this is the eyes, ears, and connecting link between members -- a vehicle for informing members of policies and actions taken, community events, as well as for publication of creative writings of members. An Editorial Board is responsible for all aspects of this publication.
Peace &
Social Action
Meets monthly to review vital social and political developments, and to recommend a course of action concerning these issues to the Executive Board and the membership. May plan one or more of the monthly membership meetings.
World Jewry Concerns itself with issues that affect Jews around the world. Discussions are aimed, first, at educating committee members on the issues, and then, through enlarged committee meetings and News & Comment, the entire membership. May plan one of the monthly membership meetings.
Book Discussion Holds monthly meetings to discuss current novels, short stories, biographies, and classics.
Yiddish Reading Meets every four or five weeks to read Yiddish literature. Welcomes those who feel confident to read aloud as well as those who like merely to listen.
Bereavement This committee will provide information and advice to those requesting it in times of crisis.
